Australian Open: Serena Williams through to semi-finals

Serena Williams is now two steps away from clinching her 19th Grand Slam title after she made it through to the Australian Open semi-finals earlier today

The American only took 65 minutes to hammer Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-2 to effectively seize victory and book her spot in the semis.

But while the victory may have looked simple for everyone else, things were pretty delicate for Serena herself as she has been suffering from a bad cold over the past few days.

“I have to keep my answers short because I keep coughing,” Williams said after the match.

“I’ve been sick the past few days, and it’s just getting worse and worse, but hopefully it will get better. I heard there’s a virus going around with a lot of the players, and I think I caught it.”

The world number one will next face American teenager Madison Keys who defeated her sister Venus Williams with a  6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win earlier today.

On the other half of the women’s semi-finals draw, second seed Maria Sharapova will face tenth seed Ekaterina Makarova on Thursday.
