Australian Open: Sharapova saves two match points to stay on course

Second seed Maria Sharapova survived a tight second round match that could have led to an early exit from the Australian Open, when she faced Russia’s Alexandra Panova earlier today.

She started the game well with a comfortable 6-1 win in the first set, but dropped the ball in the second one, allowing Panova to claim it 6-4. The third set for a nail-biting one for Sharapova as she witnessed Panova race into a 5-1 lead in the set.

But Sharapova rallied back to, winning six extra points to secure a 7-5 win and thus complete a sensational comeback that puts here in the third round of the Grand Slam event.

The 27 year-old will either face 31st seed Zarina Diyas or Slovakia’s Anna Schmiedlova in the next round.

Similarly, Roger Federer also dropped a first set in his third round tie against Simone Bolelli, but nonetheless ended up winning three sets in a row to also book his spot in the third round of the competition.
