Eight time world champion Datuk Nicol David eased through her first round at the Tournament of Champions (TOC) as she defeated Australia’s Rachel Grinham 6-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7 in New York.
The Malaysian world number one took some time to gain momentum, which led to her dropping the first set 6-11. But from then on, it was all about Nicol as she clinched three sets in a row to ensure her progression into the next stage.
The 31 year-old will now move into the quarters, where she will face world number 5 Alison Waters of England who defeated Mexico’s Samantha Teran with a 6-11, 11-6, 11-3 and 11-5 victory in the first round.
Meanwhile, Malaysian number 2 Low Wee Wern suffered an early exit from the TOC as she was sent packing by USA’s Amanda Sobhy who clinched a 11-7, 5-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-7 win
