Future of Malaysian Formula One GP in doubt

The Malaysian Formula One Grand Prix could be coming to an end with its immediate future hanging in the balance.

The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has been hosting the Malaysia GP since 1999, but their contract with Formula One, which expires this year, hasn’t been renewed.

According to Utusan Malaysia though, SIC Chief Executive Officer, Razlan Razali is working hard to negotiate and potentially renew the contract with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), to keep the Malaysian GP running for the next few years.

Reports also revealed that Razlan is in the midst of meeting Formula One Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone in London, regarding the contract extension.

The Formula One GP has contributed a lot towards the expansion of Malaysia’s economy ever since it was introduced in 1999.

“Although F1 is an expensive sport, it has contributed a lot to our country’s economy especially when it comes to tourism in Malaysia.” Razlan told Utusan Malaysia.

“At the same time, it has effectively promoted Malaysia as a globalized nation on a bigger scale.”
