Steve McMahon is no stranger to the world of football as he most notably played for Liverpool in the 1980s and even captained the Liverpool squad for a couple of years. The 53 year old has played for other Premier League clubs as well such as Everton, Aston Villa and Manchester City. After retiring from his football career, he started his managing career with Swindon Town, Blackpool and then Perth Glory in 2005. As his managing career ended, he became a sports television pundit for ESPN StarSports. FourthOfficial.com caught up with the former England international and here’s what he had to say with regards to his career and the present state of his beloved Liverpool.
FO: What is the best memory in your football career?
I have been very fortunate I can say. My best memory was in the FA Cup, World Cup finals and many more but captaining the Liverpool team was the best experience and memory in my career. It was wonderful.
FO: How was it like captaining the team?
I loved it so much, I was so proud to be one. Some players couldn’t handle it as the responsibility was too much but I just loved it.
FO: What inspired you to be a professional footballer?
It was something natural that came to me. I have always wanted to play football as a kid, I dreamed to play for Everton and succeeded. Ever since then, I just developed and developed.
FO: Being a manager in clubs such as Blackpool, Swindon Town and Perth Glory, what do you look into most in players?
Well, firstly I need talented players. Talent plays such a huge role, so does a player who has discipline and is organized. They have got to give a 100% in every game despite their off days; they have to keep going.
FO: Should Brendan Rodgers continue to lead Liverpool or should he be retained?
I’ve seen him as a coach, he’s excellent! Expectations are very high for Liverpool, so they have to expect the change. With such high expectations of the club, who else can replace him as a manager? Tell me..
FO: What are your thoughts on the current Liverpool squad?
Well, they had a fantastic season last year. I think, Liverpool need more world class players. Suarez has been out, Sturridge have been out all season.. It has took away 52 goals this season.
FO: Who do you think should be in the January transfer window?
Quality players for sure. Players that will go into the team to make the squad better. They are always very panicky, and that Liverpool shall make sure to not overspend. They should wait for the season to end, look for player who’s contract is out in Madrid, Arsenal, Barcelona, Manchester City etc.
