Malaysian badminton needs Rexy Mainaky, says Boon Heong

Malaysian men’s doubles player Tan Boon Heong believes that the country’s ability to revive itself on the international arena will be boosted significantly should Rexy return to coach the doubles’ squad.

Recent rumours have suggested that the Indonesian coach is eyeing a return to Malaysia, and was even offered a prominent role earlier this year – though Rexy was forced to turn it down at that point.

While Boon Heong was quick to point out that Rexy would no longer be able to train him, since he is now competing as an independent pair with Koo Kien Keat, he has very few doubts that Rexy would revitalize the national badminton squad.

“I think Rexy is a very suitable candidate for the national badminton squad, because our players already have the basic skills. Right now, it’s all about the mentality as well as fitness conditions,” he told Harian Metro.

“His style of coaching will really help improve the national squad. If he returns to BAM, it’ll be good for everyone within the team,” he added.

Rexy was primarily known in Malaysia for inspiring Boon Heong and Kien Keat to be ranked as the World No. 1 doubles pair, a few years back. He is currently the Director of High Performance at the Badminton Association of Indonesia.
