Selangor FA release Australian defender Rob Cornthwaite

Australian defender Robert Cornthwaite has confirmed that he won’t be featuring for Selangor in next year’s Malaysia Super League.

The 30 year-old took to Twitter to announce the news, before going on to pay tribute to the Selangor fans for the support he received throughout 2015.

The news certainly comes as a surprising one, considering the role Rob played in Selangor’s impressive performances throughout the year.

He adapted instantly after joining them at the end of last year, and formed an admirable partnership with Shahrom Kalam at the heart of their defence.

They ended up having the third best defence in the league, conceding only 29 goals in 22 games. More importantly though, Rob’s performance in major games, especially in the Malaysia Cup semi-final against Pahang, played an integral role in them being able to nullify offensive threats in the form of Dickson Nwakaeme.

Rumours are now suggesting that several other Malaysian teams could be set to swoop for his signature, though it remains to be seen if Rob opts to move to another club abroad.
