U.S Open: Peng Soon-Liu Ying stride into quarters

The Californian wind is definitely a strong blow for Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying as they had to earn their second-round win through the hustle and bustle of a strenuous match before setting foot into the quarter finals of the tournament.

It is no doubt that national mixed doubles duo Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying are rapidly improving and slowly climbing their way up to victory of the US Grand Prix Open.

The Malaysian top seeds took a big leap towards the quarter finals after defeating Indonesian pair Fran Kurniawan and Komala Dewi in an intense match.

The two took over the first set with an easy win of 21-12 but got tangled in a rubber match which they were outplayed 19-21. The third set was rather arduous and nerve-wrecking since the two pairs managed to prove themselves highly competitive but it was the Malaysians that secured the ultimate win with an astonishing victory 27-25. The match lasted for one hour and seven minutes.

Peng Soon and Liu Ying will be facing South Korea’s Choi Solgyu and Eom Hye Won, whom defeated Hock Ai Lee and Phyllis Chan in two straight sets 21-15, 21-15, in the quarters.

Liu Ying had admitted that luck played a big part in their triumph.

“We were indeed nervous playing against them today (yesterday) because we had been defeated before. Luck was on our side,” said Liu Ying as quoted from Arena Metro.

“Tomorrow’s (today) match is a tough one but we’re determined to play better than before.”

Meanwhile, Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong too had managed to cruise to the quarters after ousting Mexican pair Job Castillo and Lino Munoz 21-6 and 21-11. They will be meeting up with England’s Marcus Ellis and Christ Langridge today.
