Negeri Sembilan FA has confirmed the appointment of Australian coach Gary Phillips as their new head coach, for next year’s Malaysia Premier League campaign.
The 52 year-old signed a one-year deal with the team and will replace K. Devan, who struggled to guide Negeri to promotion this year.
Chief Minister of Negeri Sembilan, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Gary Phillips will be expected to takeover the exact similar mission – promotion into the Malaysia Super League in 2017.
“This means that the team must finish in the top two positions of the MPL next year,” he told Bernama.
“Besides that, Gary will also be responsible for the President Cup Team as well as the Youth Squad. As for the main team, we’ve shorlisted around 30 players thus far and we will finalize the full squad of 23 players before the transfer window ends in February.
“There are several positions that we need to strengthen, which is why we will continue to monitor and evaluate our current shortlist,” he added.
Gary, who previously led Sabah into the Super League back in 2010, believes that he is ready for the challenge and expressed his excitement at getting the role.
“I’m very proud to be managing Negeri Sembilan. I will work hard to reach the target. I know it won’t be easy, but with support from players and the fans, I believe that it can happen,” he enthused.
