China Open: Chong Wei off to a flying start

Lee Chong Wei moved into the second round of the China Open, which is being held at the Haixia Olympic Sports Center in Fuzhou, China.

The 33-year-old only took 36 minutes to beat Angus Ng Ka Long from Hong Kong, winning 21-10, 21-15.

Chong Wei will next face either Chou Tien Chen from Taiwan or Xue Song from China who will be facing one another.

Meanwhile, national women’s shuttler Tee Jing Yi is also through to the second round after defeating Chen Hsiao Huan from Taiwan in a fierce encounter, winning 21-17, 22-20.

Unfortunately, national mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying were surprisingly beaten by unseeded pair Reginald Lee Chun Hei-Chau Hoi Wah, losing in straight sets 21-23, 18-21, despite numerous attempts to drag the game into the rubber set.

National men’s doubles Hoon Thien How-Lim Khim Wah were also unable to follow suit after losing in the rubber set to fourth seeded pair Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen 16-21, 21-18, 13-21.
