Nicol David’s hope of retaining her Qatar Classic title is over after she suffered a defeat to Nour El Sherbini at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, yesterday.
The match was incredibly intense and it lasted for over an hour, though El Sherbini triumphed on five sets, winning 6-11, 12-10, 11-5, 4-11, 9-11.
While Nicol was visibly upset with the defeat, El Sherbini expressed her joy at being able to defeat her arch rival.
“I can’t believe I have beaten Nicol and this is a dream come true. Nicol is one of the best players I’ve ever played against.
“She is a legend and there will never be anyone like her,” she told Ahram Online yesterday.
El Sherbini will next face Laura Massaro, who cruised past Omneya Abdel Kawy 11-7, 11-4, 11-6 in her semi-final clash.
