FINA Diving GP: Dhabitah-Jun Hoong secure Malaysia’s third gold medal

Malaysian diving pair Nur Dhabitah Sabri-Cheong Jun Hoong ensured the country went back home proud after clinching nation’s third gold medal in the women’s 10m platform synchro discipline on the last day of FINA Diving Grand Prix Kuala Lumpur.

The divers only had two days prior to that to prepare, after coach Yang Zhuliang paired them up due to injuries to Pandelela Rinong and Leong Mun Yee.

And they certainly did not disappoint as they led from the second round on wards for a combined 319.74 total, followed by China’s Wang Han-Wang Ying (283.38) and Ukraine’s Vlada Tatsenko-Ganna Krasnoshlyk (273.33).

“Winning the platform synchro gold was a surprise as Jun Hoong and I were only focusing on the springboard in training as we are preparing ourselves for Olympic qualification,” said 16 year-old Dhabitah.

Jun Hoong, on the other hand, was excited about her new partner, admitting that she doesn’t mind being paired with her in upcoming competitions.

“The result is beyond our expectations. I don’t mind being paired with Dhabitah again, it’s up to the coach to make the decision.”

“Many athletes have been injured currently, so the possibility of me and Dhabitah being paired again is high,” said Jun Hoong, as quoted by Harian Metro.

Dhabitah and Jun Hoong also claimed a silver medal in the women’s 3m springboard synchro.
