French Open: Chong Wei moves into quarters

Datuk Lee Chong Wei is through to the quarter-final of French Open after beating Viktor Axelsen from Denmark 12-21, 21-17, 21-14 at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris.

This marks Chong Wei’s first quarter-final appearance in quite a while, having suffered a major dip in form, since losing to Chen Long in the World Championships final back in August.

Chong Wei will next face Sho Sasaki from Japan who had defeated his countryman Kento Momota 15-21, 21-19, 21-19.

Meanwhile, Koo Kien Kiat and Tan Boon Heong were knocked out after losing in the second round to Hiroyuki Endo and Kenichi Hayakawa 21-14, 19-21, 16-21.

Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong also unable to follow suit after losing to Kim Gi Jung and Kim Sa Rang from South Korea 11-21, 18-21.

In the women’s singles, Tee Jing Yi also crashed out to Maria Febe Kusumastuti in the second round match, losing 17-21, 21-8, 21-14.
