Head coach of the Malaysia junior hockey team, Arul Selvaraj said he is not too worried with the performance of his team at the Sultan Johor Cup this year.
Instead, he considers the tournament to be a platform to gain valuable experience as they were able to analyse their opponent’s strengths and weaknesses as well as take note on improvements that need to be made for future competitions.
He said the team needs to improve in terms of concentration as they easily lost ball possession and committed too many fouls during the game.
“Sometimes we failed to intercept our opponent’s passes and gave too much space for them to attack. We also didn’t create many chances when it came to penalty corners and we should do better than that but I’m not too worried since we have learned a lot from this tournament,” he told Utusan.
“We still have time to prepare and plan our strategies for the Junior Asia Cup. For now, we’re still learning several new techniques and I hope we can get something out of it,” he added.
Malaysia will be competing in Group A of the Men’s Junior Asia Cup, alongside India, Japan and China. The tournament will be held from the 14 to 22 November, in Kuantan, Pahang.
