Denmark Open: LCW suffers shocking second round defeat

Lee Chong Wei’s Denmark Open dream suffered a huge blow after the Malaysian went down to another defeat in the second round earlier today.

Chong Wei was looking to rediscover his form after few mediocre performances previously, only to be tamed by Hong Kong’s Wei Nan 18-21, 19-21.

The defeat is Chong Wei’s third in a row, following his early exits at the Japan and Korea Open.

It was also another disappointing show by Chong Wei’s teammates, with top men doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong going out in as early as the opening round itself, losing to Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen.

Singapore SEA Games gold medalists Amelia Alicia Anscelly-Soong Fie Cho also suffered the same fate in the first round, defeated by eight seed Ma Jin-Tang Yuanting from China.

WHAT DO WE THINK?

Another humiliating show by our national shuttlers. The Denmark Open served as a platform for them to collect points ahead of Rio Olympics, but they were again far from their best. The same can also be said about LCW, who can be relied upon before, but now has lost his consistency. BAM needs to cooperate with the shuttlers and find out the problem before things get out of hand. If they continue performing the same way here, chances are our national shuttlers will not be able to qualify for next year’s prestigious competition.
