Australia pulled one back through Frazer Gerrard, who scored from a penalty corner on the 43rd minute.
However, Malaysia managed to recover their two-goal lead through Nor Azrul Abd Rahman, who converted a penalty corner taken by Muhd Najmi Farizal Jazlan on the 56th minute to make it 3-1.
The Australians tried to get back into the game by going on all-out attack but were only able to score one more goal through Max Hendry on the 63rd minute and the scoreline remain 3-2 until the final whistle.
Meanwhile, India edged Argentina 3-2 while Great Britain and Pakistan played out a goalless draw.
