Belgium sealed a spot in next year’s Euros after clinching a 3-1 home win over Israel last night, but had things gone wrong, Dries Mertens would have undoubtedly been the scapegoat.
With the score 0-0, Belgium had a glorious opportunity to seize the lead in the first half, with Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne threading a perfect cross.
But Napoli’s Dries Mertens, who appeared to be in the perfect position to hand his side the lead, produced an unbelievable miss from inches away from goal, kicking it wide off target.
The miss visibly silenced the crowd and got them wondering if it was going to be a night filled with bad luck. Thankfully though, they got into their strides after the break and sealed a resounding 3-1 win.
