The head coach of Malaysia’s junior hockey team, Arul Selvaraj has named an 18-men squad ahead of the Sultan of Johor Cup Hockey Tournament starting from Oct 11-18 at Taman Daya Hockey Stadium, Johor Bahru.
National hockey striker Muhammad Shahril Saabah is among the picks to represent the national team in the tournament and not to mention two UniKL players; Meor Muhammad Azuan Hassan and Muhd Haziq Samsul who had represented Malaysia in the Hockey World League in Antwerp, Belgium in June.
Six teams will be competing in the fifth edition of the tournament – India, Germany, Argentina, Great Britain, Australia and Malaysia as a host.
The international invitational under-21 hockey tournament in Johor is considered as a warm-up tournament for the national junior team before they compete in the Junior Asia Cup in Kuantan, Pahang from Nov 14-22.
The top four teams from the Junior Asia Cup will qualify for the Junior World Cup in India next year.
Should host nation India fail to book themselves into the top four in Kuantan, only three slots will be given to Asian countries at the Hockey Junior World Cup.
Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) had earlier suggested that the main priority for the junior hockey side is to qualify for the Junior World Cup 2016.
