Teenager Jin Wei bags second senior title ahead of Peru WJC

She may not be old enough to get a driver’s license yet, but youngster Goh Jin Wei was all pumped up following her victory in the women’s singles final at the Vietnam international Series yesterday.

15 year-old Jin Wei recorded an emphatic 21-9 21-13 win over Chen Su-yu of Taiwan in just 27 minutes to lift her second international title of her career, the first being the Belgium International Challenge last month.

It was also a sweet revenge for Jin Wei, who lost to the Taiwanese in the semi-finals of the Thailand Junior International in Bangkok earlier this January.

She will now fully focus on the upcoming World Junior Championships in Peru from November 4-15.

Meanwhile, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM)’s development project manager Kwan Yoke Meng hopes that the youngster will be able to replicate her form in Peru.

“I hope she keeps it up in the World Junior Championships. It is important to keep her injury free. Her fine performance in Europe last month including this win in Vietnam should serve as the best confidence boost.”

I don’t want the players to feel pressured, but I think Jin Wei is able to reach the semi-finals this time,” he said, as quoted by Harian Metro.

WHAT DO WE THINK?

Goh Jin Wei is certainly a star in the making. At the age of 15, she has just claimed her second international title. Many of our junior shuttlers have been promising, however, lack the ambition compared to Jin Wei. She has the raw potential to be one of country’s brightest players, provided she is guided well from the start. BAM, especially, needs to handle her with care and not risk any injuries so early in her career.
