ATP Malaysian Open: Local hopes dashed as Ahmed Deedat suffers exit

Malaysian tennis player Ahmed Deedat Abdul Razak failed to carry the nation’s name forward after crashing out in the second qualifying round of ATP Malaysian Open, yesterday.

Ahmed Deedat, who gained a wild card entry, could not continue his fine form after losing to Micjal Przysiezny from Poland 1-6, 1-6 in 51 minutes at the Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil.

“I’m not fully prepared, physically and technically. The level of tennis today (yesterday) was too quick for me, I’m yet to reach those heights.”

“This competition has provided enough experience for me and I really need more of this kind of challenge to improve my performance quality,” said the 22 year-old, as quoted by Harian Metro.

With Ahmed Deedat’s exit, Malaysia will have no representatives in the men singles category, after Syed Mohd Agil Syed Naguib and Christian Olive Lee also bowed out earlier.

WHAT DO WE THINK?

To be frank, our tennis players still have a long way to go when it comes to international competitions. They lack exposure, experience, strength (mental and physical) and many more characteristics to be successful. Even when playing hosts, our players could not use it as a home advantage, what more when they are sent abroad. Players like Syed Mohd Agil and Ahmed Deedat are talented, but need more guidance to develop into top class competitors.
