The FIFA World Cup has a tendency of producing cult heroes, especially through images of passionate fans that tends to go viral. And the 2014 FIFA World Cup did the exact same, with Clovis Acosta Fernandes emerging as the icon of the tournament.
While Germany deservingly clinched the World Cup title by beating Argentina, most would refer to their semi-final win over Brazil as the most enthralling match of the tournament. It was a one-sided match, yes. But Germany’s dominance over a side that was competing on home soil, left thousands of Brazilians heartbroken, including Clovis.
At the end of the match, a photographer snapped a photo of him hugging a replica of the World Cup trophy, weeping for his beloved Seleccaos and their broken dreams. The image went viral all over the internet, with Clovis being dubbed ‘The Sad Brazilian Man’.
As usual, the internet did its job and it was soon found out that Clovis was after all a hardcore Brazilian supporter, with a rather feisty reputation within his home nation as well. He was widely known as one of the oldest supporter of the national team, having cheered them on since the first World Cup in Italy.
For all the positive connotations attached to him, Clovis was battling cancer for the last nine years and the fight unfortunately came to a crushing end of Tuesday, as he passed away at the Santa Casa Hospital in Porto Alegre.
His death came as a major shock to the footballing world, with tributes pouring in from all over the globe, on Twitter.
