It’s pretty understandable if some individuals consistently lose hope in Malaysian sports, especially judging by the sheer level of incompetency that gets displayed publicly these days.
But every now and then, you get reminded of why there’s plenty of other reasons to be positive about. Young Malaysian athletes left for Samoa recently, hoping to make their nation proud and they certainly did so as we collected a total of 17 medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
The achievement was undoubtedly spearheaded by the Squash contingent, as they completed a clean sweep, winning all five events to secure five gold medals.
Swimmers Wong Fu Kang and Welson Wee contributed three medals each, with the former winning two gold and one silver, while the latter collected one gold and two silver.
Malaysia’s other medals came from the likes of Nur Atikah, who triumphed in Women’s 58kg category of weightlifting as well as Jabriella Teo and Erry Hidayat, who won the Women’s +69kg and Men’s 69kg respectively.
