M’sian duo through to second round of Japan Open

Malaysia men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong suffered an early scare before making it through to the second round of Japan Open.

The national no.1 pair was beaten in the first set by Japan’s Hiroyuki Saeki-Ryota Taohata but put on an inspiring performance in the rubber set, winning 19-21, 21-19, 21-16.

V Shem-Wee Kiong will now face Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen from Denmark after the Danish pair upset Taiwan’s Lee Sheng Mu-Tsai Chia Hsin 21-14, 22-20.

Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles event, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying lived up to expectations by beating young Chinese pair Wang Yilv-Luo Yu 21-16, 21-18.

Peng Soon-Liu Ying, who won the Poland Open this year, will however, face an uphill task after drawing reigning world champions Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei from China.
