“Expect more M’sian divers to qualify for Rio” – Zhuliang

After witnessing two more divers qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics at the Asian Diving Cup yesterday, national diving coach Yang Zhuliang has challenged the rest to follow in the footsteps of their teammates.

The competition saw Ooi Tze Liang and Nur Dhabitah Sabri winning their respective categories, and will now join Pandelela Rinong and Wendy Ng, who have already qualified through the World Aquatic Championships in Russia last month.

“The list of national divers who will be going to Rio Olympics this time around is much better compared to the ones in 2012. The focus now has shifted to the synchronizing events, and I’m confident more will continue to book their place in Rio.”

“So far, I’m satisfied with the performances of our athletes, although there were some who did not perform as well as expected, maybe due to the pressure of being the hosts,” added Zhuliang, as quoted by Harian Metro.

16 year-old Nur Dhabitah will be making her Olympic debut, in the same 10m platform category alongside national diving queen Pandelela Rinong, while Wendy will be in the 3m spring board event.

Tze Liang, on the other hand, will be the only male athlete for Malaysia to be participating in two events, the 10m platform and 3m spring board.
