Consistency earned us the title, says JDT’s Mario Gomez

Johor DT head coach Mario Gomez claims that his side weren’t lucky to be Super League champions, instead suggesting that their consistency played a big part in them clinching the title.

Despite falling to a 2-1 defeat against Felda United last Saturday, JDT were still handed the title, after Pahang incurred a 3-1 defeat against Terengganu. But as far as Mario Gomez was concerned, their consistency throughout the season enabled their triumph.

“It’s not about luck. We won most of our games, and we lost very few games this season. What’s important is that the victories in our previous games helped us win the title,” he told Utusan.

“It’s important for the team. And if you don’t have great players, it’s very difficult to be league champions. This bit of success is thrilling. I’ve only been here for four months, and I’ve had the opportunity to win this trophy. It’s important for me, for the team and for the fans,” he added.

Despite celebrations getting underway in Johor yesterday, the Southern Tigers will now switch their attention towards their AFC Cup quarter-final tie against South China, which will take place on Tuesday night.
