11 year-old Aira Azman defied the odds by winning the Junior Squash Open Championships in Hong Kong, last Sunday.
Still a student of Jalan Pegawai Primary School, she defeated fellow Malaysian, K. Sehveetrra 11-2, 6-11, 11-8 and 11-6 in the final which took place at Cornwall Street Squash and Table Tennis Centre.
Prior to that, Aira came through the semi-finals after beating Hong Kong’s Lam Po Ying 11-5, 11-4 and 11-1.
“It has been my aim to reach the final since the beginning and I’m truly blessed to be claiming this international trophy. I promise to work harder and focus all my hard work towards the next Junior Indian Open Championships this coming September,” said Aira to Sinar Harian.
The Year 5 student added that she first picked up the sport aged 6, following the footsteps of elder sister Aifa, and won several local competitions. She also admitted that squash has never been a disturbance to her studies, as she trains only two hours a day.
Meanwhile Aira’s mother, Anis Haniza Ahmad, 43, said that the whole family will continue supporting her daughter’s ambition to win local and international tournaments in the future.
