Manchester City legend Peter Barnes has been a household name in Malaysia, due to his regular appearance as a pundit on Astro Supersports, but the ex-footballer has now ventured into a new effort – one that he is deeply passionate about as well.
“Back to Basics” is a brand new football coaching program that has been launched by Peter in Malaysia, seeking to address the grave need for more youth development efforts within the country. We caught up with the man himself, for a quick chat on his new endeavour.

“Back to basics, that’s the name of the course. It’s how I started getting involved with football, playing with all the boys. Lads from 8 years-old to 16 years-old can join. That’s how I learned to play football. And I’ve brought that to Malaysia,” Peter told FourthOfficial.com
The program was officially launched in July, and their first full session took place in the first week of August. As of now, the program has 20 kids, ranging from 8 years-old to 16 years-old, under its tutelage. And while Peter is hoping to see the program grow over the next 12 months, he is determined to prioritize quality over quantity.
“We’re still in our infancy, and it’s going to take some time. Hopefully we’ll grow over the next twelve months or two years.
“But I don’t want too many boys either, I want quality. I don’t want 150-250 boys, I want 50 quality boys. Because you need that quality to play football and that’s what I’m looking for,” he added.
The program is held on a weekly basis, with sessions being hosted at the SK Bukit Bintang 1 field, in Petaling Jaya.
