Lee Chong Wei took a big leap forward in achieving his dream of winning the men’s singles world title after reaching the quarter-finals at Istora Senayan Indoor Stadium, yesterday.
The Malaysian no. 1 badminton player defeated China’s Wang Zhengming 21-17, 21-19 in 49 minutes, making a statement that he is certainly not bowing out without a fight.
“I told myself that I’m not going to lose to another player from China before I retire. I felt good after clinching the match, although there were few unforced errors, it has given me confidence for the quarter finals tomorrow (today),” said Chong Wei, as quoted by New Straits Times.
The Jakarta World Championships is Chong Wei’s ninth appearance, and he almost missed it due to an injury on his toe, days before the start of the event.
The 33-year-old will next face 13th seed, Hu Yun of Hong Kong, who sprung a surprise by eliminating third seeded K. Srikanth of India.
