World Championships: LCW set for third round tie against Zhengming

Lee Chong Wei is through to the third round of the Jakarta World Championship after a nerve-wrecking win over Germany’s Marc Zwiebler yesterday.

He went into the match as massive favourites to ease past Zwiebler, but despite doing so in the first set, where he won 21-14, the German shuttler bounced back in the second and pushed Chong Wei before claiming the set 21-17.

But the former world number one eventually regained his composure and outclassed Zwiebler comfortably in the third set, winning it 21-8 to book his spot in the next round.

Chong Wei will next face China’s Wang Zhengming, who has been seeded eighth for the tournament. But while Chong Wei’s head-to-head record with the Chinese shuttler is impressive, he intends to be careful with his approach in this particular duel.

“The last time I met him was at the Taiwan Open and I won the match on straight sets. But right now, I’m just going to focus on myself,” Chong Wei told Harian Metro.

“I’ll admit that I haven’t played exceptionally well in my first two matches and that’s precisely why I’m hoping to be able to do better on Thursday.”
