World Championships: Zulfadli seals ‘surprise’ win over Chou Tien

Zulfadli Zulkifli got his World Championships campaign off to a terrific start after upsetting Taiwan’s Tien Chen Chou in straight sets earlier today.

The young shuttler came into this tournament as Malaysia’s second singles player, behind Lee Chong Wei, but was expected to have a tough battle against his Taiwanese counterpart.

But in the first set, Zulfadli was absolutely brilliant as he powered past Chen Chou to eventually clinch it 21-5. The second set however, was a lot more complicated as both players fought till the end, with the scores being tied at 20-20.

Zulfadli eventually held his nerve and secured two additional points to win it 22-20 and secure his progression into the second round of the tournament.

His victory comes a timely reminder of what he’s capable of, after BAM technical director Morten Frost claimed that Zulfadli wasn’t ready to win the World Championship.
