“Malaysians have no self-confidence!” – BAM’s Morten Frost

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost has slammed local shuttlers, claiming they have “zero self-confidence”, after receiving resignation letters from from men’s doubles pair Mak Hee Chun-Teo Kok Siang on Tuesday.

The Dane also expects more national players to follow the exit door, as he spoke while attending the on-going 100PLUS national Junior Badminton Circuit Finals in Kedah.

“I expect more to quit. It’s not the coaches I expect from, rather the players who will throw in the towel. Malaysians lack self-confidence. This is seriously lacking in the local players. This needs to be checked,” Frost told Sports 24/7.

Former world junior champions Hee Chun and Kok Siang were hailed as the future pair for Malaysia, but the duo failed to make it at the senior level, which led to their sudden exit.

Frost also mentioned that Malaysia needs more junior tournaments to identify young talents in order to replace the departing ones.

“The 100PLUS National Junior Circuit is a good place to spot young talents. We need more states to hold such tournaments. I see some good badminton talent from outside the Bukit Jalil School, and I’m quite impressed.”
