“It’s not impossible for Pandelela to win an Olympic gold medal”

Malaysia continues to dream of seeing a local athlete win an Olympic gold medal, but according to national diving coach Yang Zhuliang, that could potentially change in the near future.

While he refused to suggest that national diver Pandelela is good enough to win gold at the Rio Olympics, Zhuliang hinted that it’s not entirely impossible for her to do so, provided she trains hard enough in the lead up to the event.

“We can’t talk about gold just yet, but for now, it’s crucial she trains and pushes herself to the limit. She has to get to a stronger level, before we can start setting goals for the Olympic Games,” Zhuliang said, as quoted by Harian Metro.

“For Rio, we are definitely aiming to win a medal. But the focus isn’t only on Pandelela, but also other others within the national squad,” he added.

National diver Pandelela, who clinched bronze at the London Olympics in 2012, booked her Rio Olympics slot last week. Besides her, fellow Malaysian diver Ng Yan Yee also booked her Rio slot, while the more divers could make the cut if they impress at the Asian Cup next month.
