Rio slot could beckon for more Malaysian divers

Chances of divers following the footsteps of Pandelela Rinong and Ny Yan Yee in qualifying for Rio Olympics next year are brighter than ever, providing they do well in the Asia Cup, which takes place next month in Kuala Lumpur.

Speaking to Utusan, national coach Yang Zhi Liang listed down the athletes who are capable of qualifying; namely, Cheong Jun Hoong, Chew Yiwei, Nur Dhabitah Sabri, Leong Mun Yee and Ahmad Amsyar Azman.

“All of them have the opportunity to book their Olympic spot, especially in the individual events. They, however, have to first get through the Asia Cup challenge.”

“We will begin our training today. This is a chance for them to recover from the disappointment suffered during the recent World Aquatics Championships in Russia.”

Zhi Liang also pointed out that he’s satisfied with the performances of Pandelela and Yan Yee. “I’m really happy that both of them delivered when needed. It’s hard to talk about getting a medal in Rio Olympics, but let us not get ahead of ourselves. We still have one more championship to go.”
