The Malaysian girl’s team marched on to the quarter-finals of the 2015 World Junior Squash Championships held in Eindhoven, Netherlands, after springing a surprise over Hong Kong.
Malaysia, seeded in the championship, crawled back to beat Hong Kong 2-1 in the third match of Group D at Squashtime Centre, earlier yesterday.
That was enough for Andrew Cross’s team to top the group and set up a date against Group C runners-up, New Zealand, later today. Prior to that, Malaysia will end their group stage matches against hosts Netherlands.
In the match against Hong Kong, Malaysia were trailing after country’s top junior player, S. SIvasangari lost 14-16, 9-11, 13-11 and 9-11 against Choi Uen Shan.
Andrea Lee, though, levelled things up after defeating Ka Wing Ho 12-10, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8 in the second game before Zoe Foo sealed the victory with an 11-9, 11-7, 11-5 win over Hiu Lam Lui in the deciding match.
After the victory, Andrew praised his young athletes but agreed that New Zealand’s threat will be greater when both sides meet in the quarter-finals.
“They all played well but we haven’t won anything yet. So now we have to start preparing for the quarter finals, he said as quoted in www.wsfworldjuniors.com.
Hong Kong, the 2005 champion, are also through as runners up and will face powerhouse England, who have won the tournament five times.
