The match that everyone has been waiting for.
Two-time Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei was left as the sole Malaysian once again in the Taiwan Open, as he marches on to the quarter finals.
By doing that, he has set up a mouth-watering clash against top seed Chen Long of China, a match which fans are eagerly expecting.
The former world no. 1 beat 10th seeded Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia 21-12, 21-18 in the second round earlier yesterday, then proceeded to win 21-10, 21-15 over China’s Wang Zhengming in the evening.
Both Chong Wei and Chen Long has been nothing but impressive in the previous rounds, so the clash between them is expected to light up the whole tournament.
This is their first meeting since the semi-finals of the Incheon Asian Games team event last year, where Chen Long won 21-17, 19-21, 21-11.
As usual, Lee Chong Wei remains the only shining light for Malaysia in the tournament.
His third round opponent, Zhengming had already eliminated another Malaysian player, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, whereas in the men’s doubles, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong were sent packing by Indonesia’s Angga Pratama-Ricky Karanda Suward who won 21-12, 13-21, 21-15.
Second best pair Mak Hee Chun-Teo Kok Siang also lost, 21-12, 21-8, to China’s Fu Haifeng-Zhang Nan.
The women’s doubles second round also saw defeat to national no. 1 Vivian Hoo Kah Mun-Woong Khe Wei who went down 21-16, 21-16 to South Korea’s Go Ah Ra-Yoo Hae Won.
