US Open prize money to increase by 10%

Winners of both the men’s and women’s singles at the US Open will receive a whooping $3.3 million, which will be the highest Grand Slam prize money in comparison to the Australian Open ($2.5 million), French Open ($2 million) and Wimbledon ($2.9 million).

A total of $42.5 million of prize money will be issued to the top players at the final major of the year, which is also higher that the $40 million total prize money at the recent Wimbledon championships.

Runners up in the singles tournament will receive $1.6 million while the winners of the doubles tournament will receive $570,000.

“We continue our commitment to ensure that the US Open offers one of the most lucrative purses in all of sports,” United States Tennis Association (USTA) president Katrina Adams said, as quoted by Yahoo! Sports.

“As we have stated, total player compensation at the US Open will reach $50 million by 2017.”

The prize money at the US Open has increased by a staggering 67 percent in the past three years.

The US Open is set to begin at the end of august, in New York. Marin Čilić and Serena Williams are the current singles men’s and women’s champions respectively.
