Former England and Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has been sacked by Russia, three years before his contract expires.
The Russian Football Union (RFU) confirmed the Italian’s departure from the national side, without revealing the replacement.
“The Russian Football Union and the head coach of Russia’s national team, Fabio Capello have reached an agreement to terminate the employment contract by mutual agreement,” the RFU said on its website, as reported by the Guardian.
Local media, though, have quoted sources saying CSKA Moscow coach, Leonid Slutski is expected to take over.
Capello’s dismissal comes as a shock, as his contract was scheduled to end after the 2018 World Cup finals, which Russia are hosting.
However, the man himself has done little to defend himself after Russia’s series of poor performances in the qualifying rounds of Euro 2016.
It was reported Capello’s contract is worth £6.8m a year, and the RFU had already shown signs in June that they were ready have discussions about ending it.
This also means that Capello would be receiving a whopping $15 million payout, as a result of his dismissal.
Russia currently lie third in Group G of Euro 2016 qualifying after winning two of their six games so far.
