Things have not been particularly easy for Tan Kian Meng, but he is determined to make it work.
The 21-year-old is a back-up men singles player for the national badminton side, who has recently begun a new chapter in his career by switching to mixed doubles.
The move was engineered by none other than Morten Frost, technical director for the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), who thinks it’s the best way to revitalize his career path.
I’m getting used to playing with someone besides depending on myself. Initially it was difficult to make the transition but after two training sessions, I’m getting the hang of it,” Tan told the Malay Mail.
As a result of it, Kian Meng will partner Peck Yen Mei and will get a chance to prove their combination at the Perak Open from July 25-30.
“My partnership with Yen Mei is getting better but I need to improve on my defence and court coverage. I need to think faster on court as well, considering doubles exchanges are quicker,” said Tan.
Tan’s coach Chin Ee Hui sees plenty of raw potential in her new student, whom she says can be moulded into something exciting.
“Kian Meng has good height and his smashes are potent. In mixed doubles, these traits are a big advantage and he could strike fear in opponents if he keeps refining them,” added Chin.
Another player who will also participate in the mixed doubles category would be former world no.1 Lee Chong Wei, partnering Vivian Hoo (picture below) at the Perak Open.
The Perak Open will serve as a warm-up before the real threat begins at the World Championships.
