158th seed Bethanie Mattek-Sands has caused another major upset in Wimbledon by defeating the world no. 7 Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-4 in a straight sets win. The American will now face Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic in the third round.
Ivanovic, who displayed signs that she was reaching her best in this year’s French Open –where she reached her first semi-final in a major in 7 years, seemed poised to make a comeback from her bumpy career ever since she won at Roland-Garros as a 20-year-old back in 2008.
Any hope of her reaching the reaching to her peak again has all but vanished in this latest defeat.
For American Mattek-Sands though, her reward for defeating Ivanovic is that she’ll be one of six Americans to make it through round two as she will join fellow Americans Coco Vandeweghe, Madison Keys, Sloane Stephens, and the Williams sisters in round three.
30-year-old Mattek-Sands had to go through the qualifying rounds to get into Wimbledon and was playing in the second-round in Wimbledon for only the third time in her career.
