Max Biaggi set for wildcard Sepang return

Sepang International Circuit (SIC) confirmed earlier today that former racer Max Biaggi will make a thrilling return, competing as a wildcard entry in the World Superbike Championship 2015 (WSBK) Malaysian round on 31 July to 2 August.

The two-time world champion had been juggling with the idea of a comeback but now confirmed his involvement with SIC, with help from Aprilia Racing Team. He will be participating in both Sepang and his home Misano’s round.

SIC Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Razlan Razali described Biaggi’s decision to compete in Malaysia as a huge selling point for the sport in the country.

“We are absolutely thrilled Max Biaggi accepted our offer to compete as a wildcard entry in the FIM World Superbike Championship round in Malaysia. He is a legendary rider who has not only achieved extensive honours in motorcycle racing, but has also vastly contributed to the sport. His decision reflects the prestige and popularity of motorcycle racing in the country.”

Biaggi has won four back-to-back titles in the 250cc Grand Prix racing between 1994 and 1997. He then went on to finish second in the 500cc class in 1998 and 2001, and also in the 2002 MotoGP before joining World Superbikes in 2007.

Local fans though, may fondly recall the Italian as the “Roman Emperor”, back in the 1990’s when he used to race in Malaysia.

“Biaggi will be the biggest name to ever compete in Team SIC Malaysia colours,” Dato’Razlan told Sports 24/7.
