Wimbledon: Djokovic defeats Kohlschreiber in tricky first round

Novak Djokovic is on a run to defend his Wimbledon title as he secured a straight sets win over German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

The match was considered a dangerous opening match for Djokovic as Kohlschreiber was indeed the toughest possible opening opponent for him in terms of ranking.

The top seed won all three sets with 6-4 in the opening match on Centre Court. This was his first competitive match since his defeat to Swiss Stan Wawrinka in the French Open final.

The Serb made 20 unforced errors but managed to broke serve to win each other three sets.

“It’s great to be back, this is the cradle of our sport. It doesn’t get any bigger than Wimbledon so it’s an honour to open this year’s play on Centre Court as defending champion,” Djokovic added.

“This is a tradition and history that is nurtured here, so it really is a special feeling.”

Djokovic is set to face Jarko Nieminen of Finland in the second round.
