Canada Open: Chong Wei through to third round

Just less than a week after securing his first international title since 12 months in the US Open Grand Prix Gold, national badminton star Lee Chong Wei has been doing good in maintaining his momentum as he successfully entered the third round of the Canada Open Grand Prix held in Calgary yesterday.

The former top seed defeated Chinese young gun Shi Yuqi in straight sets 21-14 and 21-15 within 33 minutes to book a next round clash with Vincent Wong of Hong Kong, whom ousted Thailand’s Sattawat Pongnairat 21-7, 21-15.

The victory had occurred in the same day as when Chong Wei found out his new BWF world ranking. Since his 8 months suspension, Chong Wei slid down the no.180 but due to his US Open victory, he had managed to climb up to his current ranking at no.99.

“Chong Wei will face Vincent next, a player that just recovered from an injury but managed to show great improvement,” said coach Hendrawan as quoted from Utusan.

“If Chong Wei is able to maintain his good performance, there won’t be any problem for him,” he added.
