Malaysian shooter Alia Sazana Azahari contributed the first gold medal for the shoting team at the Singapore Shooting Centre yesterday.
Having being overshadowed by big names like Bibiana Ng and Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi, Alia proved herself in a sterling display of skills when she downed Singaporean Teh Xiu Hong with a stunning score of 7-1 in the finals of the 25m women’s individual pistol event. The bronze medal was handed to Vietnam’sThi Le Hoang Ngoc.
The gold medal was a shocker as many had never expected for the 23 year-old to advance to the finals.
Alia had admitted that she made many mistakes during the qualifying rounds but the team was still strong based on the shooters’ consistency.
“When I made it to the finals, I started to feel pressured but I got over it. I was confident that I could win,” said Alia after the finals.
Alia also claimed that the chants from her friends saying “Chilli’s Burger” was one of the factors to her victory.
“I won free burgers because this was a bet between me and my friends. This was also one of the ways to reduce the pressure.”
