Fifteen year-old national badminton player Goh Jin Wei stunned the crowd when she saved Malaysia from being defeated in the hands of Vietnam and also aided the nation to march into the semi finals of the SEA Games in the Singapore Stadium yesterday.
The squad was trailing 0-2 behind Vietnam when Lim Yin Fun lost to Vu Thi Trang 17-21, 16-21 and Vietnam extended their lead when Nguyen Thi Sen succeeded 21-17, 16-21 and 21-17 against Ho Yen Mei.
Then, doubles pair Amelia Alicia Anscelly and Soong Fie Choo delivered the first point for the nation by defeating the pair, Thai Thi Hong Gam and Pham Nhu Thao 21-8 and 21-10.
The Kuala Lumpur Open champion then closed the gap when she won against Nguyen Thuy Linh in three sets. She secured the first ser 21-19 before falling back 18-21 in the second. She then dominated the final set 21-11.
Malaysian number one Vivian Hoo and Woon Khe Wei broke the tie by ousting Vu Thi Trang and Nguyen Thi Sen 21-14 in two straight sets.
Both the men and women’s team will face Indonesia in the semi finals today.
