Muhd Hafizuddin Mat Daud rewrote history by winning the nation’s first ever gold medal since 14 years in the pétanque event during the Singapore SEA Games today.
He defeated Cambodia’s Thong Chhoeun 13-6 in the men’s singles category at Padang to clinch the win. The bronze medal was shared between Vietnam’s Ron Ngo and Laos’ Phoudthala Keokannika.
“I did not expect to create history by getting the gold. Since 2001, no team had collected any in pétanque. This win is very meaningful for me,” said the 23 year-old as quoted from Bernama.
“I also wish to express my appreciation to our coach who had been relentless in guiding me to this success. My challenger was very strong.”
“When I saw that I was leading early in the game, my confidence increased,” he added.
