The Malaysian sailing team contributed a surprising victory in the SEA Games as they secured a gold medal after defeating the Singaporeans in the Optimist team event (below 16) yesterday.
Malaysia had won the event in Kuala Lumpur back in 2001, where they downed the Singapore team with a score of 2-0.
The Malaysian Optimist team had comprised of Muhammad Fauzi Kaman Shah, Abdul Latif Mansor, Nor Nabila Natasha Mohd. Nazri, Nur Aisah Rose Ramlee and Muhammad Dhiauddin Rozaini.
The victory was a triumphant start for the sailing team whom targeted at least six gold medals in this year’s edition of the SEA Games.
“The competition was tough but before the race I was confident that we could defeat them (Singapore). We fought till the end and we’re happy to be one of the youngest athletes in the Malaysian team to contribute a medal,” said 13 year-old Fauzi as quoted from Utusan.
“I want to dedicate this medal to my parents, coaches and my hardworking team mates. I hope that this gold medal will give us the spirit to thrive in the other events.”
