French Open: Sharapova bows out; Williams survives scare

Reigning champion Maria Sharapova’s bid to retain her French Open title came to an end as she was unfortunately defeated yesterday.

The Russian was knocked out in straight sets by Czech Lucie Safarova 7-6 (3), 6-4. Even though Sharapova was clearly battling with cold and coughs throughout the French Open, she refuses to attribute her loss to her health issues.

“I’m still a competitor no matter what. I’m going to do everything in order to go out and give it my best. I did the best I could. Today it wasn’t enough, because my opponent had a different gear than I did,” said the second seed after the match.

Meanwhile, top seed Serena Williams survived a scare to reach to the quarters. She was defeated by compatriot Sloane Stephens 1-6 in the first set, before bouncing back to secure the following two sets 7-5 and 6-3.

Williams, currently on a run for her 20th Grand Slam title, was stunned by her opponent. Stephens managed to break her serve three times whereas Williams only broke twice.
