Murray defends appointment of Mauresmo

Andy Murray has defended his decision to appoint a female in the form of Amelie Mauresmo as his coach, following the resignation of Ivan Lendl.

The 27 year-old Brit raised eyebrows when he decided to acquire the services of the two-time Grand Slam winner, and it even led to the resignation of his assistant coach and fitness trainer.

But as far as Murray is concerned, he sees no reason as to why Mauresmo wouldn’t be able to help him grow as a player, before going on to assert that the decision matches his feminist ideals as well.

“I’ve actually become very passionate about getting more women in sport, giving women more opportunities,” said Murray as quoted from Telegraph.

“When I was younger, I wasn’t thinking about stuff like that. But now I’ve seen it with my own eyes, it’s quite amazing how few female coaches there are across any sport.”

“I’m not sure why, but ever since I was young, I’ve found it easier to talk about how I’m feeling with the women closest to me — my mum, my wife.”

“I’ve found it difficult to open up sometimes as you feel judged or that it’s seen as a sign of weakness. Sometimes, when we’re competing and working out, trying to be macho, it can get a bit testosterone-fuelled. I’ve ended up having some big arguments.”

Murray, who pulled out of the Italian Open last week, will be competing in the French Open, which gets underway later this week.
