VIDEO: Terengganu fans turn violent after FA Cup defeat to LionsXII

Last night was supposed to be a momentous occassion. The Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium was being reopened for the first time, since the structure collapsed few years ago. And it was going to host a game that could potentially put Terengganu in the final of the FA Cup.

What happened on the pitch, validated the hype as well. In contrast to the first leg, this game was far more open, with both sides going on the offence. That resulted in four goals being scored throughout the first half. Terengganu scored another in the second half to make it 3-2; leaving them with one more goal to score, in order to book their final spot.

Next, controversy ensued.

On the 90th minute mark, Terengganu managed to find the back of the net through Ahmad Nordin, though he was correctly ruled out for offside. The decision sparked massive outbursts from fans and players alike, as objects started getting thrown onto the pitch.

Paulo Rangel was sent off for furiously protesting against the linesman, before Gustavo Lopez was also sent to the dressing room late in the game, for shoving the referee from behind. But what happened after the game, was far more atrocious.

Fans started protesting outside the stadium, and even set certain portions of the stadium on fire, to depict their displeasure of the referee’s decision last night.
