After a long dispute over who should be the one to dropped to accommodate Lee Chong Wei’s participation in the 2015 Jakarta World Championships, the final decision has been made.
Badminton Association of Malaysia have confirmed the decision to drop Chong Wei Feng, meaning that Lee Chong Wei will be competing in the World Championship alongside independent player Zulfadli Zulkifli.
Initial reports suggested that Zulfadli was the candidate in danger of being dropped, and that sparked an angry response from Zulfadli himself, who claimed that the decision was unfair since he is no longer under the tutelage of BAM.
“Between Wei Feng and Zulfadli, Wei Feng is much older and has been into the World Championships twice. Zulfadli, he is still young at 23, we decided that given the principle, philosophy that we have, we decided that Zulfadli will go for the championships,” BAM president Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff told reporters.
“We have spoken to Wei Feng and he is very positive with the decision. He realises BAM’s programme now and we reassured him that we will give him full support to qualify for the Rio Olympics,” he added.
